What's the point???

can anyone tell me what is the point of having wisdom teeth if they don't even serve a purpose? I mean what is the point of having them if all you have to do is go through all the pain and suffering of having them taken out? Not only is the taking out of the teeth painful but the recovery for some people (meaning me) is worse than the procedure itself. Another question I have is that if we have to go through all that pain then how come we have to go back because dentist's prefer to give people the non-dissolve able stitches? I mean if their excuse is that they want to do a check up then just do the check up you don't have to put my mouth in more pain just to pull things out again. I guess I can try and look at the positive side of things, at least the check up is free to me.
